Intense pulsed light technology (IPL) is
not a laser but a FDA approved high intensity flash-lamp that
emits bursts of light, causing destruction of veins, brown
spots and unhealthy skin infiltrates.
At Imago, we use a state
of the art Prolite II which has a unique pulse-forming technology
which prevents over heating so minimizing side-effects.
IPL has been described as a “Skin Improvement
Machine”. It is used to treat the following conditions:
- Benign
vascular lesions such as thread veins
- Symptoms
of rosacea
- Diffuse redness and flushing
- Sunspots and pigment changes
due to sun exposure
- Hyperpigmentation
However, this treatment improves any skin imperfection, creating
a smooth, even skin texture and reducing signs of aging. It can
be used for face, hands, neck and other sun exposed areas.
The results are amazing!
FAQ’s
What does it feel like?
Your skin will be cleansed of make-up and then a cooling gel
applied. The pulses of light feel like a warm rubber band snapping
against the skin. If you are especially sensitive, the settings
can be adjusted and additional cooling can be used to ensure
your comfort.
How long does the treatment take?
This depends on the area treated, but usually a full face takes
30 mins.
What should I expect afterwards?
Your skin will be a little red immediately
after the treatment, and this usually fades within a few hours.
A few days after the treatment some brown spots become darker,
then peel off and are completely gone after 1-2 weeks. Then
you will see the improvement in tone and a more youthful appearance
developing.
Your skin will be sun sensitive and you must
wear sunblock (SPF 60+) for the next two weeks.
How many treatments will I need?
For
maximum benefit, we recommend 4-6 treatments at 2-4 week intervals.
A treatment every 6 months combined with a good home skin care
program will help maintain your youthful look.
Is it safe?
IPL technology has been used for
over a decade now, with very few problems. The Prolite
II has a special feature to prevent overheating and so
prevent burning.
Less than 1% of patients experience
either hyper or hypo pigmentation which usually resolves
after several months.
You can help prevent side effects
by avoiding tanning or sun exposure prior to the treatment
and wearing a good sunblock (SPF 60+) for two weeks after.
